John Daly’s first PGA Tour victory in over a decade has come with a Presidential seal of approval.
Donald Trump, a noted avid golfer, tweeted his congratulations to Daly on Monday morning, one day after Daly hung on for his first career PGA Tour Champions title and first win on tour since 2004.
“Congratulations to @PGA—JohnDaly on his big win yesterday. John is a great guy who never gave up – and now a winner again!” Trump wrote.
Daly, 51, donned American flag pants Sunday as he stumbled to the end of the final round in the Insperity Invitational, closing with three straight bogeys. His 3-under 69, however, was good enough to finish atop the leaderboard by one stroke. Daly completed his weekend at The Woodlands, Texas, with a 14-under 202 and $ 322,500 in winnings.
“It wasn’t pretty at the end,” Daly said. “But I got it done and that’s all that matters.”
Daly, who endorsed Trump during the campaign, has earned the reputation as golf’s bad boy after several off-course incidents. In 2011, he let loose on a Florida golf reporter and posted his phone number on Twitter. Daly also once spent a night in a North Carolina jail after passing out drunk at a Hooters, and last year told a story about how he once threw $ 55,000 he won at a casino out a car window to prove a point to his ex-wife.
On the course, he has flaunted his flashy wardrobe — as was evident Sunday — and even once played a round shirtless in Missouri for a local TV crew.
And now he has received praise from the President.
