File this one under strangely-timed cryptic tweet.
With speculation swirling in the wake of him skipping out on his exit interview with the Knicks, Kristaps Porzingis tweeted Saturday evening – and then immediately erased – “L.A. Clippers” with three smiling emoji faces.
The very rapid delete suggests it was a mistake from Porzingis, but what could it mean? Was he hacked? Porzingis did not provide a follow-up tweet to explain.
Adding fuel to the fire was a similar tweet, which was eventually erased, from model Abigail Ratchford, who Porzingis has been linked to romantically in the past.
The message simply said “Clippers” with a green check mark
Earlier in the day, he tweeted out a photo from Spain swapping jerseys with Barcelona soccer star Neymar.
Porzingis, who is playing for Latvia in the World Championships this summer, is frustrated by New York’s direction and dysfunction, according to multiple sources, and left the U.S. last month without talking to anybody in the organization. After Porzingis no-showed the exit meeting, Phil Jackson said he’d be open to listen to trade offers for his 21-year-old stud power forward.
A day before Porzingis was tweeting mysteriously about the Clippers, ESPN reported multiple teams contacted the Knicks about Porzingis’ availability in a trade. It’s unclear if those talks led anywhere, but now the Clippers jump to the front of the speculation train.
The Clippers again bombed in the playoffs and have three key free agents this summer in Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and JJ Redick. They’re also believed to be one of the franchises Carmelo Anthony would waive his no-trade clause to join, although they refused to offer anything but role players at the trade deadline.
Porzingis’ trade value, however, is much higher. The problem is they don’t have a first-round pick to deal until 2020, and their top-2 players are pending free agents. Not an ideal trade partner for Jackson’s greatest asset.
But somebody with access to Porzingis’ Twitter account is happy about something involving the Clippers.
