Henrik Lundqvist to join Team Sweden for 2017 World Championship

Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said Thursday he will be joining Team Sweden at the men’s IIHF World Championship. He will head to Cologne on Friday. His twin brother Joel is the captain for Sweden.

Lundqvist wanted to play with his brother and have another chance to play internationally after the news that the NHL won’t be participating in next year’s Olympics.

“I haven’t played with him in 12 years,” Lundqvist said of his brother. “Also the fact that we’re not part of the Olympics, I see this as an opportunity for me to play for my country one more time, and with my brother. I’m gonna go there and try to finish really strong.”

The goalie still feels he has enough in him to continue playing so soon after the Rangers were eliminated from the playoffs by Ottawa on Tuesday.

“There’s definitely gas left in the tank here,” Lundqvist said. “I was hoping to play for another month.”
