Giants WR Brandon Marshall opened his press conference Thursday by inviting the question he knew he was going to be asked.
“Let’s get the business out of the way,” Marshall said. “Sheldon Richardson question, go ahead and open it up.”
Of course, Marshall is as aware as anyone that Richardson recently ripped him, saying there are “15 reasons” why the Jets locker room is better this year, referencing Marshall’s No. 15.
Marshall did, of course, get questions about Richardson’s comments. Asked if they bothered him, the Giants wideout responded, “I mean, I am human.”
He tried to address Richardson’s comments without going into specifics. It is well known that Marshall and Richardson butted heads last year on the Jets.
“You know what? It was the third or fourth time that we have gone down that path and like I said, it was a tough year for us, and in the National Football League, it is not unique,” Marshall said. “There are 31 other teams in that same position trying to fight to get to a Super Bowl and win a Super Bowl and it didn’t happen for us. We had high hopes coming off of that first year that we were all together in 2015 and it kind of blew up in our face, so we were all disappointed.”
Marshall noted that he has tried to be a better teammate in the second half of his career.
“I mean I am not a perfect guy, but I worked extremely hard to get into the position that I am in today,” Marshall said. “The first couple years of my career were rough and a lot of it I did myself, hurt myself and since that point, once I figured things out, I have worked extremely hard to be a better person and extremely hard to be a better teammate, a better father, a better husband, and I am proud of where I am at today.”
Damon Harrison, also a former teammate of Richardson’s, said he thought the “15 reasons” quip was “clever.”
But he also offered Richardson a piece of advice.
“Stay away from the damn microphone, Sheldon,” Harrison said with a laugh.
