The footage is also helping insurers fight the scourge of cash for crash fraudsters, who deliberately stage prangs in order to make claims.

The cameras can be bought for as little as £40.

And providers including AXA and Swiftcover offer savings of around 15-20 per cent to customers with dash-cams.

Natasha Chauhan, Halfords’ dash-cam buyer said: “The peace of mind that dash cams offer all drivers has already driven a 300 per cent surge of sales in recent years.
“With new innovations coming in all the time and the backing of a major insurer offering significant savings, these helpful gadgets have just become even more desirable to motorists.

“We have experienced a surge in growth in dash cam sales – making in-car cameras one of the most frequently searched for product categories on our website.”

The retailers research showed that 56 per cent of motorists feel safer when using a dash cam.
